The 6th symposium of IAO Scientific Committee was convened on 1st January 2015 in Tehran at IRIB International Convention Center.

A panel of renowned orthodontists and OMF Surgeons as well as new generation of orthodontists were invited to a one-day symposium by Head of IAO Scientific Committee. The theme of symposium was “Orthognathic Surgery“, an interdisciplinary domain which needs close cooperation between orthodontists and OMF surgeons.

Founded in 1997 and affiliated to IRI Medical Council, Iranian Association of Orthodontists is the voice of 400 registered orthodontists within Iranian Medical Council.
Currently, Dr. Mahtab Nouri, Associate Professor of Shahid Beheshty University of Medical Sciences, serves as IAO President and Dr. Masoud Davoudian, registered orthodontist within IRI Medical Council, serves as Head of IAO Scientific Committee.

The Chairpersons of Orthodontics Panel were:

• Dr. Hossein Ravanmehr
• Dr. Mohammad Basafa
• Dr. Abdolrahman Shokarbakhsh
• Dr. Bahram Saedi

Speaker first in Orthodontics Panel, Dr. D Atrkar Roshan defined the jaw asymmetry management and Dx and Tx of Hemimandibular Hypertrophy.

It was followed by Dr. E Karimian’s lecture-Joined the meeting from US- in New Orthognathic Surgery Technologies.

Dr. M Oshagh also made a speech in Pre-surgical Orthodontics Considerations emphasizing on the importance of close cooperation between orthodontists and OMF Surgeons due to achieve highest possible treatment outcomes.

Dr. A Showkatbakhsh as the Chair of orthodontics panel declared that a close cooperation between orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons is crucial due to achieve successful results in orthognathic surgery cases. Besides, he invited all participants to actively take part in discussion and share their ponits of view about the mentioned topic.

Dr. H Rahimi joined the symposium through video conferencing facilities mentioning the protocol of cooperation between orthodontists and OMF Surgeons in US.

Dr. A Tehranchi explained some practical points in regard to SARPE (Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion).

The OMFS Panel Chairpersons were as follows:

• Dr. Afshin Haraji

There was just one lecture in this panel about unfavorable outcomes of orthognathic Surgery by Dr. F Pour Danesh.

Considering facial esthetics prior to orthognathic surgery was discuused by Dr. H Adeli Najafi, the chair of OMFS panel.

Dr. A Mesgarzadeh was the special guest of the symposium. He is one of the the most exprienced OMFS professors in Iran.

Capability of miniscrew to fix the advanced jaw deformities was challenged by Dr. M Ordobazari.

Dr. A Hassani, OMF Surgeon and associate professor of Azad Dental Faculty of Tehran, actively participated in the related discussions.

Dr. M Safavi, IAO Board Member recommended setting narrower and more specific topics for coming symposiums due to much more efficient discussions.

Between the panels, the symposium paid tribute to 2 professors emeritus:
Dr. Hossein Ravanmeher and Dr. Bahram Saedi.

Dr. H Ravanmehr was paid tribute by Dr. M Nouri, President of IAO. Dr. Ravanmehr is an emeritus professor of Tehran Dental School.

Dr. B Saedi was paid tribute by Dr. M Safavi, IAO Board Member. Dr Saedi is an emeritus professor of Shahid Beheshti Dental School.

Dr. shirvani highly appreciated the attendees and asked IAO President to actively collaborate with IRI Medical Council- the nation’s largest independent organization in the field of medicine which registers all health care professionals (except nurses) to practice in Iran, and regulates bi or multilateral collaborations between health care professionals & other associations.- in favor of professional rights of IAO members.
