| Many progressive treatments are now available for patients 7 to 11 years of age, that provide significant benefits, especially when jaw irregularities are present. These treatments may also prevent certain conditions from worsening. Treating children with these types of problems during their growth stages allows our practice to achieve results that may not be possible when face and jaw bones have fully developed. This not only simplifies or eliminates additional treatment for the child, but also saves money.
Because a young child’s permanent teeth have not finished erupting, we are able to thoroughly evaluate the front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships and address any impending problems at its earliest stage. At this young age, treatment may not yet be necessary, however, it is often the best time to correct a crossbites resulting in poor bite articulation or occlusion, manage an openbite, stop thumb-sucking effects, reduce the likelihood of fracturing protruded front teeth, eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems and also guide the growth of the jaw in severe cases and regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches. Early orthodontic treatment varies between patients, but may include removable or fixed appliances. |
