An orthodontist is a certified dentist who completed a three or four year residency program specializing in orthodontics. In other words, an orthodontist must first complete a 6-year dental undergraduate programme at a university dental school. After a few years of clinical practice and acquiring higher qualifications, they apply to attend a full time orthodontic specialist training programme.
However, some general dentists provide orthodontic treatment while they are unlikely to have the same level of experience as an orthodontist, who has had significantly more training and only carries out orthodontics. All orthodontists are dentists but less than 2% of dentists in Iran are qualified as specialist orthodontists.
